MANILA, Philippines - Mapua pulled one over fancied Ateneo, 74-65, in a duel of unbeaten teams even as reigning UAAP titlist National University beat Far Eastern U, 77-71, to clinch a quarterfinal berth in the PCABL (Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League) seventh Freego Cup at the Phil. Buddhacare Academy gym in QC recently.

Daniel Aguirre scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the third quarter as the Red Robins pulled away by 14, 54-40, en route to victory, their fifth straight for the Group B lead.

The Eaglets dropped to 4-1.

Drawing another stellar performance from Mark Dyke, the Bullpups outlasted the Baby Tamaraws to join Group A frontrunner Chiang Kai Shek College in the next round with a 4-1 mark.

Only the top four teams in each group of seven teams will advance to the quarters of the tournament also sponsored by Smart Telecom, Fresh Gear (FG), Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Colt Commercial, K Tech Sports, Insular Square of Cebu and Cebu Pioneer Auto Supply.

The Baby Tams, who thumped the UST side, 110-49, last Tuesday, also made it to the Last 8 phase with a 4-2 record.

Letran, meanwhile, closed out its Group A campaign with a 62-59 loss to Jose Rizal University but still clinched a berth in the next round with a 3-3 record.

Adamson, on the other hand, demolished University of the East, 85-62, also last Thursday to keep its quarterfinals hopes alive. The Baby Falcons jumped to No. 3 at 3-2 in Group B, relegating La Salle-Zobel (2-2) to No. 4.
