Abdulqoahar, Arguelles secure Head Jr. titles

MANILA, Philippines - Bacolod’s Fernando Arguelles and second seed Allian Abdulqoahar overpowered separate rivals to rule their respective divisions in the Head 2014 Junior satellite circuit national tennis annual age-group tournament Visayas leg at the Praxevilla tennis courts in Dumaguete City recently.

The top seeded Arguelles unleashed furious backhands and proved too much for Jeremiah Macias, scoring a 6-1, 6-4 romp in the boys’ 16-under finals of the event which drew more than 100 participants.

Abdulqoahar, playing out of Zamboanga City, nailed two crowns in the 11-leg satellite junior tennis competition backed by Smart Communications, Smart Sports, Chris Sports, Head Graphene, Toalson and Head, the official tennis ball. He rallied past third seed Jeremiah Macias, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, to claim the boys’ 18-U title and teamed up with Joshua Regino to beat Reyniel Marcellana and Raymark Marcellana, 8-2, for the doubles crown in the premier class.

Joshua Regino crushed Daniel Eric Diao, 6-1, 6-1, to pocket the 14-U plum while top seed Cesar Salimbangon of Cebu trounced Justin Selorio, 6-3, 6 -0, to snare the 12-U diadem. 

Salimbangon also took home the 10-under unisex crown with a 6-2, 6-1 romp over Peter Andre Rodriguez.

Fancied Carlyn Bless Guarde captured the girls’18-under crown with a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Kiana Vincoy. She also bagged the 14-U crown by beating Ellain Rose Bahonsua, 6-1, 6-1.

Guarde made it a treble as she partnered with Bahonsua to defeat Carmelle Fe Amaro and Suzette Rodriguez, 8-2, to cop the 14-U doubles title. 

Kiana and Hannah Vincoy thrashed Shiloh Bulangis and Sharon Bulangis, 8-6, to pocket the girls’ 18-doubles plum.
