St. Benilde routs Trinity in Filoil Cup

MANILA, Philippines - College of St. Benilde turned back Holy Trinity College, 106-92, in the lone game of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at Gatorade Hoops Center yesterday.

The Blazers took command en route to their second win in four starts, tying idle San Sebastian at 2-2 in Group C behind unbeaten Centro Escolar (2-0) and National U (1-0). The Wildcats from General Santos City absorbed their third straight setback.

Action swings back to the Arena on Wednesday with Emilio Aguinaldo College battling HTC at 2:15 p.m. and CEU gunning for 3-0 against University of the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Southwestern U’s Cameroonian slotman Landy Sanjo was named Purefoods Best Player of the Week for leading the Cobras to a 2-0 record against Jose Rizal and Perpetual.

Sanjo posted averages of 17 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 blocks in the Cobras’ “statement” triumphs over two previously unbeaten teams, JRU, 72-68, and Perpetual, 79-77.

“Landry is a big part of our success. He plays smart, never forces the issue, and is our defensive anchor,” said SWU coach Yayoy Alcoseba, whose wards look to carry the momentum over to the tourney’s Cebu swing on May 21-25 against UAAP champ La Salle and defending Filoil titlist University of the East and Cesafi rivals University of San Carlos and University of the Visayas.

The 6-foot-7 Sanjo led the week’s “Gatorade Best Five” and was joined by Perpetual Help’s Harold Arboleda, UP’s JR Gallarza, NU’s Alfred Aroga, and Letran’s Kevin Racal.– Olmin Leyba
