MANILA, Philippines - University of the Philippines wore down University of the East in triple overtime, 114-113, to finally barge into the win column even as Mapua gained a share of the lead in the PCABL (Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League) seventh Freego Cup at the Phil. Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City recently.
Jaggie Gregorio and Enzo Barraquias took charge in the third extension, scoring six points each as the Junior Maroons outlasted the Junior Warriors in a wild finish for their first win in three games in the event presented by Freego.
Allane Barles led UP with 29 points, including a tough basket that sent the game into second overtime. Gregorio and Barraquias chipped in 25 and 21 points, respectively as the Juniors Maroons bounced back from a crushing defeat to Mapua last week.
The Red Robins, on the other hand, got another stellar performance from Sherwin Concepcion and Daniel Aguierre to hand Adamson its second straight defeat in a 52-39 victory.
With the victory, Mapua tied Ateneo for the lead at 3-0 in the tournament also sponsored by Smart Telecom, Fresh Gear (FG), Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Colt Commercial, K Tech Sports, Insular Square of Cebu and Cebu Pioneer Auto Supply.
In other games, multi-titled Chiang Kai Shek College tied La Salle-Zobel at 2-0 by downing Letran, 68-58, while Far Eastern University defeated Jose Rizal University, 54-46, for its first win in two games.
Shannon Gagate and JV Gallego led Chiang Kai Shek College’s well-balanced attack by scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Concepcion led the Red Robins with 21 points and 20 rebounds while Aguirre added 10 markers and seven boards. No player from Adamson scored in double figures with JD Tungcab emerging as the top scorer with eight points.
