PTA holds new face tournament

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A competition for newcomer which, hopefully, will help produce the Philippines’ future local and international stars.

This is the main objective of the 2014 SMART National New Face of the Year taekwondo championships which will be held on May 3-4 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Around 1,500 newcomers from all Philippine Taekwondo Association chapters and branches throughout Metro Manila and the provinces as well as the various military services are expected to vie for honors.

Competition will be conducted in eight categories, namely, senior men and women, junior men and women, Cadet men and women and grade school boys and girls.

Each category will feature novice and advance participants.

The two-event event supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, SMART Communications Inc., MVP Sports Foundation, PLDT, Meralco, TV 5 and Milo will give newcomers the opportunity to display what they have learned in taekwondo classes and feel the pressure and intensity of actual competition.

Organizing committee chair Sung Chon Hong says the event is also PTA’s way of fulfilling its commitment to sports development, particularly the overnment’s grassroot program.

For decades now, the PTA has brought honor and glory to the country by winning medals in prestigious international events like the world championships, Asian Games, Asian championships and the Southeast Asian Games.

Parents interested to see their children involved in taekwondo and sports enthusiasts are invited to witness the tournament.  Competition starts at 9 am.
