Agilas seek second win vs Lady Altas
MANILA, Philippines - The Davao Lady Agilas seek to ride the momentum of their impressive debut against the Far Eastern U Lady Tams as they take on with the reigning NCAA champion Perpetual Help Lady Altas today in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
Bannered by the finest players in the region, the Lady Agilas bucked a fourth set meltdown to beat the Lady Tams, 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, and kick off their drive for a berth in the quarterfinals right on their first stint on the country’s premier women’s volley league sponsored by Shakey’s.
Davao is expected to lean again on May Sheila Agton, Venus Flores, Princess Joy Oliveros and Angel Mae Antipuesto, who came through and led the way with 15, 14, 11 and 10 hits, respectively.
But Davao will be facing a team desperately needing a win since the Lady Altas must sweep their last two games and keep their flickering quarters hope alive in Group B of the event backed by Mikasa, Accel and Lion Tiger Mosquito Coil.
Game time is at 2 p.m.
“That’s our goal, to make it to the next round,†said Davao coach Shane Alagao in Filipino.
Alagao said her team is carrying the pride of the whole of Davao, and perhaps, the whole of Mindanao, as it is composed of standouts from Ateneo de Davao, Jose Maria College, San Pedro College, University of Mindanao and Holy Cross.
St. Benilde, meanwhile, shoots for the last quarters berth in Group A as it collides with winless St. Louis University in the 4 p.m. main game.
The Lady Blazers hope to check their two-game skid with a victory over the Lady Navigators on a team built around Therese Veronas, Jeanette Panaga and Maureen Loren.
Meanwhile, the Ateneo-St. Benilde match last Sunday will be shown on GMA News TV Channel starting at 1 p.m. today with today’s Davao-Perpetual match and St. Benilde-SLU duel to be aired tomorrow and Thursday, respectively, according to the organizing Sports Vision.
