Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Little League Philippines’ Jolly Gomez was elected to the Little League International Board and was adjudged Outstanding District Administrator for Asia-Pacific during the recent Little League International Congress in Minneapolis.

Gomez became the first ever Filipino to be sitting as Little League International board member, where he will be the new representative of the AsPac region. He will serve a four-year term.

Other new members voted into the board were Steven Johnson of Williamsport, who is assuming the seat vacated by retiring Dr. Creighton Hale; Tony Richardson of New Jersey District 11, representing Eastern Region; and Bob Toigo of Washington District 9, representing Western Region.

In the same Congress, Gomez was feted with the “District Administrator Little League Meritorious Service Award” for his work in the Little League movement in the country, where he’s in charge of 33 charters.

“This award is not mine, it is for all of us who love baseball and kids in the Philippines,” said the 54-year-old Gomez, thanking all the Little League volunteers in Phl.

He said the twin achievements will further inspire them as they stage the Phl Series from April 21-27 in Marikina City. A huge field of 118 teams will be competing the baseball and softball events of the tourney held in celebration of Little League’s 75th anniversary this year.
