MANILA, Philippines - Wang’s Ballclub routed Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 109-77, to kick off its campaign in the 2014 MBL Open basketball championship at the Lumera Tower in Legarda, Manila.
Handled by coach Pablo Lucas and manager Alex Wang, the Mandaluyong-based team scored almost at will in a dominant first quarter stint en route to a lopsided victory in this two-and-a-half month long tournament backed by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Dickies Underwear, PRC Couriers and Zucchero Sports Bar.
Six players, led by former UP standout Eldrick Ferrer and TV/movie actor Ervic Vijandre, scored in double figures to underscore Wang’s Ballclub’s balanced firepower.
Ferrer, who also saw action for Blu Detergent in the PBL, scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first two quarters, while Vijandre, who also played for Erase Plantcenta and Wang’s in the PBA D-League, poured all his 12 points in the second half.
JM Ferrer added 16 points, Keith Rosopa contributed 13 points, Erick Acuna had 11 points and Edwin Asoro had 10 points for Wang’s.
Jayson Bondoc finished with a game-high 33 points for PUP.
Our Lady of Fatima University rallied to beat NAASCU champion Centro Escolar University, 78-73, for a 1-1 win-loss record.
