Pinoy booters bow to Brazilians in WC

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines yielded a heartbreaking 0-1 setback to host Brazil to settle for the silver medal in the Street Child World Cup girls’ division at Fluminense FC Stadium in Rio de Janeiro Sunday.

Thayane put the Brazilians on the scoreboard in the first half, firing from the edge of the goal that eventually settled the issue in the closely-fought contest.

Phl nearly got the equalizer in the second half when one of its strikers found some space on the edge of the box, but hit her shot straight at the keeper. 

“Gutted. It was such a tight game and could’ve gone either way,” said Roy Moore coach of the team organized by Fairplay for All Foundation.

It was some sort of revenge for the Brazilians, who lost to the Filipinos in inaugural SCWC in 2010 when they played with mixed teams.

“It’s been great for the girls on and off the pitch. They’ve had experiences they will keep forever, and will use to help them make their next steps in life. They really put their all into the game, and were very upset to loose, but once they’ve recovered they’ll be able to look back on great memories,” said Moore.
