The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Triathletes from the Philippines and Asia test their readiness for the Incheon Asian Games when they clash in the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) set at the Subic Bay Freeport April 26-27.

This year’s SUBIT competition in the Elite category is expected to be tough with the presence of very competitive triathletes from around Asia. Qualifying points are up for grabs in the event.

“The event is under the supervision of the ITU and Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) and at stake are Asian and world ranking points. So we expect our Asian counterparts to compete here and use the event as part of their preparation for the Incheon Games,” said TRAP secretary-general Mon Marchan.

The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) is sending Nikko Huelgas, John Chicano, Kim Mangrobang and Claire Adorna to the Asian Games which will be held Sept. 19-Oct. 4. The SUBIT will be a major test for them.

This early Japan is a contender with strong triathletes like Kohei Shimomura, Ayami Kawaguchi, Hideko Kikuchi and Chika Sato. At the same time competitors from Singapore, Syria, Macau, Estonia, Australia and Canada will be coming. The participation of China, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan is expected.

Apart from the Elite competition being a part of the Asia Cup circuit, also to be held are the National Age-Group finals, the Inter-Club competition, the Asian ParaTriathlon Championships and the national triathlon tryouts.

The K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) is supported by K-Swiss, Century Tuna, Asian Center for Insulation Philippines (ACIP), Gatorade, Speedo, Standard Insurance, David’s Salon, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Tourism Department and Green Triathlon.
