UE powerlifters rule nat’l bench press

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the East (UE) powerlifting team stamped its class in the 2014 Dewfoam National Bench Press Championships held at the Robinsons Nova Market on March 1-2.

Team UE emerged as the champion in the girls’ development division, first runner-up in the men’s sub junior and the women’s novice, and second runner-up in the men’s novice.

The UE powerlifters in various categories who emerged as individual champions, winning a gold medal in each category are UE students Eriel Cardano (57-kg) and Sumi Magallanes (35-kg) in the girls’ developmental category, Patricia Nicole Rosario (63-kg) in the women’s sub junior, UE marketing coordinator Edith Romero (72-kg) in the women’s master 3, UE weightlifting coach Edmund Cardano at 105-kg in the men’s master 2, UE students Annah Daniel at 52-kg in the women’s novice, Cyrus Joshua Cardano at 105-kg in the men’s sub junior and the men’s novice, and Abdul Roman Noor at 83-kg in the men’s sub junior.

The  silver medalists were UE student Omar Sabido (74-kg) in the men’s sub junior and Romero (72-kg) in the women’s novice.

The  bronze was won by UE student Alberto Saygo (53-kg) in the men’s novice.

Eriel Cardano, Rosario, Romero and Daniel were also declared the tournament’s best lifters in their respective categories.

The competition, organized by the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines, had nine team participants including Team UE.
