Baby Tams bag football title, complete golden treble
MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University blanked Ateneo, 2-0, to retain the UAAP juniors football crown Saturday at the FEU-Diliman pitch.
The Baby Tamaraws swept the Season 76 best-of-three championship series, 2-0, with Janryl Balanueco winning the MVP honors.
FEU’s triumph in high school play completed the league’s first-ever golden treble in football.
Last week, the Tamaraws defeated University of the Philippines to regain the men’s championship, while the women’s squad fashioned out a back-to-back title romp over University of Santo Tomas.
The Baby Tamaraws’ Earl Laguerta took home the Rookie of the Year honors, while his teammates Gilbert Mendoza and Dominique Canonigo bagged the Best Striker and Best Midfielder plums, respectively.
Zach Banzon of the Blue Eaglets copped the Best Goalkeeper award, while his teammate Timothy Perdegon was named Best Defender.
FEU nearly had a perfect campaign in the eliminations, winning its first five matches before settling to a 2-2 draw against Ateneo in the final day to force a best-of-three title series.
The Baby Tamaraws routed the Eaglets, 4-1, in the championship opener.
