52-year-old hits homer, succumbs at home plate
IVANA, Batanes , Philippines – Gloom descended on the last day of the four-day 2014 barangay sportsfest of the country’s smallest municipality yesterday as one of the players apparently succumbed to heart attack while she was completing a home run in a softball game.
Arsenia Cabas, 52, just hit the home base while playing for her barangay in the women’s softball game for women 40 years old and above.
Onlookers said the victim was smiling as she rushed to the home plate to put her team ahead against barangay Radiwan, when she started gasping for breath.
She was immediately rushed to the Batanes General Hospital in the capital town of Basco, 14 kilometers away.
She was pronounced dead upon arrival by her attending physician.
Cabas is survived by her husband Narciso, Sr. and eight children.
Mayor Leonardo Hostallero said he regretted the unfortunate incident, coming as the games were about to close.
The victim’s husband said the loss of his wife is “so sudden that we could not believe she is gone.â€
“Who would expect her to pass away when she has never shown any signs of illness?†he added.
