MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas put one over reigning UAAP titlist La Salle as it came away with a 71-63 victory in the opener of the third Pilipinas Chinese Amateur Basketball League (PCABL) Dickies Women’s Cup at the CEU Lumera Tower gym on Legarda, Manila over the weekend.
The Tigresses, behind Lore Rivera’s brilliant playmaking and superb defense, surprisingly dominated the Lady Archers and went on to post the first upset win in the tournament.
Held to just two points in the first two quarters, Rivera hit her stride in the payoff period, firing 10 points to help power UST to victory. She later clinched the first Dickies Best Player honors.
Seven other players scored four points or more for UST with Jhen Angeles also finishing with 12 markers and Kim Reyes chipping in 11.
In other games, Centro Escolar University, with Maryann Doloque on the firing end, dumped many-time UAAP champion Far Eastern University, 75-54, while College of St. Benilde, last year’s runner-up, drubbed Fatima, 88-53, in the tournament also sponsored by Smart Telecom, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Power House, CW Home Depot, Dickies Underwear and Hapee Toothpaste.
Doloque finished with 15 points while Folashade Ogusemoyin imposed her will in the lane and pulled down 12 rebounds aside from scoring four points.
