PSL names 53 tankers for int’l meets, Universiade

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Swimming League (PSL) named 53 swimmers from Western Visayas Region, who qualified for tournaments in Hong Kong and Singapore and the 2015 Summer World Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.

Heading the list are Rose Mary Occeno and Jason Villaruz, who reached the PSL qualifying marks for Universiade and Singapore meet, and Kyla Soguilon and Michael Lozada – both qualifiers for the Singapore and Hong Kong events.

The qualified swimmers were selected based on their showings in the 53rd PSL Leg Series dubbed as Langoy Capiz held over the weekend in Roxas City.

“I am trying to help each and every one of you to cross the bridge easier. Swimming in the Philippines is so much behind and we are trying to make up for lost time. So many years were put to waste,” said PSL president Susan Papa.

“We are bringing swimming to a winning stage. We are surrounded by water and there is no reason why it will not work if we are together. Swimming is a triangle. It involves the swimmers, coaches and parents. They must work together to produce a good swimmer.”

The other qualifiers for Singapore tournament are Fiona Beltran, Juliene Fernandez, Sidley Malumay, Cyra Montano, Jennuel de Leon, Paul Ramirez, Kobe Soguilon, Eduard Solina, Karlo Solina, Tiffany Yunsal, Metchel Luces, Lester Yatar, Paula Bernada, Mae Delfin, Celine Delotavo, Gayle Guirao, Jade Landrillo, Ysabyl Landrillo, Patricia Molino, Mae Opina, Elijah Albar, Paul Aragon, Kim Jaro, Joe Borres, Vince Aragon, Wilse Azarcon, Alic dela Cruz, Neo Ausan, Jan Arenal, Trisha Bongco, Natalia Daban, Jovie de Juan, Donabelle Donasco, Angeline Eguia, Casy Gumabong, Lessy Mena, Rencel Uytoco, Franchino Aplaon, Karl Arenal, JC Bandejas, Zerwin Buntiong, Guilliver Clemente, Ashlee Dequito, Ace Mena, Phyne Molina, Roy Sta. Rita, Louie Vanderuse, Pete Villaflor and John Villaruz.

“We’re talking about a new hope and new beginning for Region 6. Skill is only part of success in life. The character that we have to build and the strategy that we have to apply with precision and resolve are all part of the development process.”

“The PSL regular monthly competitions give you  a pretty good appreciation of how you fare at your level. International competitions give our swimmers a better perspective of life, because travelling is education. Make use of it in your learning process because we want you to become leaders of our country,” Papa said.
