Altas, two others boost semis bids

MANILA, Philippines - University of Perpetual Help, San Beda and University of Santo Tomas held off their respective rivals to stay in the hunt for semifinal berths in the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup basketball tournament at the Arellano gym in Legarda last Sunday.

Earl Thompson tallied 14 points while Crispin Elopre added 11 markers for the Altas, who thwarted the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 66-55, keep the solo lead in Group B with four straight wins.

The Tigers, who drew 19 points from Kevin Ferrer, and 15 markers each from Karim Abdul and Ed Daquioag, edged the FEU Tamaraws, 83-79, to notch their second win in a row and third overall against the same number of defeats.

Francis Abarcar shot 15 points for the Red Lions, who waylaid the Lyceum Philippines University-B Pirates, 67-60.

Ara Abaca tallied 18 points for the La Salle Lady Archers, who smothered the UST Tigresses, 65-55, in the women’s side.
