Young triathletes on 35-day training in Portugal

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – In a bid to boost the country’s chances of qualifying bets to the Youth Olympic Games, the Triathlon Association of the Philippines will send its YOG aspirants to a 35-day training camp in Rio Maior, Lisbon, Portugal.

According to TRAP president Tom Carrasco, male triathletes Jimuel Patillan and Justin Chiongbian and female bets Magali Echauz and Vicky Deldio will undergo intensive training in the ITU Development U23 and Junior Camp in Portugal in April.

“They will be training under ITU high-performance coach Sergio Santos and we expect them to improve a lot and be at their best when they leave the camp and eventually compete in the qualifying,” said Carrasco.

The ITU Asian YOG Qualifier will be held in June in Kazakhstan, with five slots to the Aug. 16-28 YOG in Nanjing at stake.

The TRAP had previously sent one of its promising triathletes –  John Chicano –  to the camp of Santos, the Portuguese expert who had trained world champion Vanessa Fernandes. Chicano had vastly improved after attending Santos’ sessions and had won a number of national races.
