The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Adamson University seized the solo lead in men’s play while defending women’s champion De La Salle solidified its hold of the top spot after the sixth round of UAAP Season 76 chess over the weekend.

The Falcons escaped with a 2.5-1.5 squeaker over the Green chessers Sunday at De La Salle’s Enrique Razon Sports Center to collect 17 points. Marc Labog delivered the clincher for Adamson with a Board 4 victory over Jan Nigel Galan.

De La Salle, behind Jan Jodilyn Fronda, Cherry Ann Mejia, Judith Pineda and Bernadette Galas, scored identical 3.5-.5 wins over Ateneo and University of the East, respectively, for a league-leading 19.5 points in the women’s side.

In Round 5, the Falcons leaned on Marc Reyes, Ali Guya and Labog in hammering out a 3.5-.5 drubbing of the Red Warriors.

Adamson is a point ahead of former champion Far Eastern University, which edged National University, 2.5-1.5. The Tamaraws have 16 points at second place, while the Bulldogs are in third spot with 15.5.

UP is running second behind the Lady Archers with 17 points after the Lady Maroons blanked the Lady Warriors, 4-0, in the fifth round, followed by a 3-1 conquest of the Lady Falcons in the sixth round.
