UAAP football: UP trips La Salle for semis berth

MANILA, Philippines - University of the Philippines (UP) tripped De La Salle, 3-1, to grab the second semifinals berth while University of Santo Tomas (UST) dislodged University of the East (UE) at fourth slot with a 1-0 triumph Sunday in UAAP Season 76 men’s football at the Far Eastern University (FEU)-Diliman pitch.

Fe Baya, Jinggoy Valmayor and Vincent Aguilar struck for the Fighting Maroons, who have collected 19 points for second place.

Jogi Celiz took advantage of a poor Red Warriors defense at the post and scored the marginal goal in the 73rd minute, sending the Growling Tigers to the needed three points to boost their Final Four bid.

Over at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field at Ateneo, FEU downed National University, 4-2, to formally clinch the No. 1 seeding in the semifinals with 27 points.

UST now has 14 points, two points ahead of UE, which is now in fifth place with 12 points. The Green Archers also have 14 points, but are still in third place by virtue of a higher goal differential over the Tigers. The Bulldogs are out of the Final Four race with only seven points to show.
