Thai promoter extends aid to Yolanda victims

MANILA, Philippines - Thirty-five Filipino boxers, whose families were among those who survived super typhoon Yolanda last November, received financial assistance worth $500 each from a Thai boxing promoter during a benefit boxing tournament in Mandaluyong recently.

“I come to the Philippines very often because the Philippines is my second home. The help I give to Filipino boxers comes from the bottom of my heart and I don’t expect anything in return,” said Thai promoter Naris Singwangcha.

Two of the beneficiaries were Gerry Patino, a rising bantamweight, who hails from Catarman, Leyte, and reigning International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero, also a victim of the recent typhoon.

“It’s a big help for us. We can finally make the necessary repairs on our damaged roof,” said the 21-year-old fighter in Pilipino. Patino was training in Valenzuela when Yolanda struck the Visayas region, ravaging almost the entire province of Leyte and leaving thousands dead and missing.

“We do not discriminate in providing help, whether you are a world champion or a young boxer, if you are from Leyte, you were still a victim. So our help is for all who deserve it,” said Singwangcha.

About 80 boxers applied for financial grant and 32 were approved by the screening committee composed of officials from the Singwangcha Foundation of Thailand and the Games and Amusement Board.

The boxers were asked to submit necessary documents, including professional license from the GAB, birth certificate or residence certificate and endorsements from their respective manager or stable.
