Record 8-day World Slasher Cup set

MANILA, Philippines - For the first time in its 52 years, the World Slasher Cup will now be an eight-day action-packed competition between the most prolific breeds of fighting cocks.

The eight-cock international derby from Jan. 20-28 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum will hold separate 2-cock eliminations on Jan. 20, 21, and 22 in which 380 entries are set to see action.

A three-day, 2-cock semifinals are set on Jan. 23, 24, and 25, before the event takes a break on Jan. 26.

Action heats up on Jan. 27 with the four-cock finals among entries with 2, 2.5, and 3 points, followed by the grand finals on Jan. 28 among entries with scores of 3.5 and 4 points.

“With a lot of top-notch entries, it’s going to be an exciting event,” said Gines Enriquez, sales and marketing manager of Uniprom, who appeared in yesterday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at Shakey’s Malate along with Uniprom officer-in-charge Atty. Allan Gabor.

Minimum weight requirements are 1.900-2.5 kgs., while submission of weights are on the day before each fight schedule from 2-8 p.m.

The World Slasher Cup was first launched in 1962 and spawned such breeding greats like Duke Hulsey, Joe Goode, Richard Bates, Ray Alexander, John Trotter, Bob Howard, Billy Ruble, Jimmy East, Tom Wilson, Gary Guillam, Dee Cox, Dan Gray, Carol Nesmith, among others.
