Filipino golfers snare three ASEAN Senior titles

MANILA, Philippines - The Federation of Philippine Amateur Senior Golfers, Inc. claimed three titles and took six other trophies in various categories in the 30th ASEAN Senior Amateur Golf Championship 2013 at the Golf Merapi in Yogyakarta and Borobudur International Golf and Country Club in Magelang, Indonesia recently.

Nestor Santillan ruled the Stableford event for Group C, Rudy Gamut reigned in Group D while Mariano Tabalba topped Group E in the event which drew 268 senior golfers from six ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and The Philippines.

The FPASGI fielded in 39 players, headed by its president Melchor Rosales and skipper Joe Estrevillo.

Domingo Manuel placed fourth runner-up while Raul Gonzales wound up 11th in the individual Open net championship while Vidal Querol finished eighth runner-up in the individual Open gross championship.

Rodolfo Alcantara took the third runner-up honors in Group A, Ernesto Bunye wound up fourth runner-up in Group C and Antonio Ong also placed third runner-up in Group D.

Meanwhile, the FPASGI seeks to promote goodwill and encourage fellowship and camaraderie among members and other senior golfers among all senior chapters of its 24 affiliates.

It conducted the President’s Cup tournament last March at the Orchard Golf and Country Club, Damariñas Cavite and hosted five legs of the six-stage FPASGI Senior Golf Series in recent months.

Veterans staged the kickoff leg last April while Royal Northwoods in Bulacan hosted the second stage last May before action shifted to the Valley Golf Club in Antipolo for the third leg last July.

The fourth leg, dubbed the Director’s Cup, was held at the Villamor Golf Club last August, while Eagle Ridge in Cavite hosted the fifth leg last October.

The final leg is set Dec. 10 back at the Orchard.
