Megafiber grabs lead; John Hay penalized

The Philippine Star

BAGUIO , Philippines   â€“ Megafiber pooled a 120 then pounced on erstwhile leader Camp John Hay’s key player’s infraction to vault into an 11-point lead over Pugo Adventure halfway through the seniors Fil Championship division of the San Miguel Fil-Am golf tournament at CJH Golf Club here yesterday.

Rene Unson followed up his opening 30 with 31 points under the Molave scoring system while Mari Hechanova and Bing Bunyi, both playing out of Canlubang, each fired 30 points and Poch Hernandez added a 29 as Megafiber took charge at 234, 11 points ahead of Pugo Adventure, which tied Megafiber’s opening 114 but slowed down with a 109 for a 223.

Goody Custodio shot 33 points but (Ret.) Gen. Eugene Martin, Richard Sali and Jun Orbilio settled for 28, 26 and 22, respectively, for Pugo Adventure in the five-to-play, four-to-count event backed by event title sponsor San Miguel Corp. and presented by Toyota.

“Our strategy in fielding of players is paying off. I believe we have the best combination to cope up with the level of the Fil-Am competition. We’ll try to improve more in the third round,” said Megafiber manager Albert Garcia.

Defending champion Camp John Hay, which produced a tournament-leading 118 Sunday, slid to third spot with a 218 after one of its players, Lee Ki Seung, was found to have used a non-conforming driver.  As a result, the team’s adjusted outputs were 103 (first day) and 115 (second day) for 218.

The other backers of the event are Wilson, Rudy Project, Empire Golf, Megafiber, Pacsports, BCC, CJH Manor, Poro Point Thunderbird Resorts, Forest Lodge, Le Chef, Rizgolf, CJH Dev. Co., John Hay Coffee Services, University of Baguio, Alveo, North Luzon Expressway, The Residences at Brent, GPS Tracker and GMJ Constructors.
