MANILA, Philippines - Big Chill made 50 percent of its shots in the first quarter and capitalized on it to beat Derulo Accerelo, 75-56, yesterday in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City.

The Superchargers have now won five straight to stretch their season-best start. Still they are not showing any signs of slowing down.

“We have learned our lessons over the past two conferences. Teams like Hog’s Breath and Informatics have spoiled our playoff aspirations. That’s basically the reason why there’s no let up in our effort every game. So I like the attitude the guys are showing on the floor,” said Big Chill coach Robert Sison, who  got another remarkable effort from his team.

Big Chill led the entire game and kept its double digit margin the rest of the way after Mike Miranda, Mark Canlas, Janus Lozada and Reil Cervantes completed a 9-0 run that extended a 34-28 lead to 17 points at the start of the third quarter.

Earlier, Jumbo Plastic clamped down on defense in the second quarter when the Giants pulled away en route to their second straight win, an 81-55 rout of the hapless Arellano UChiefs.

And before dusk fell, defending champion NLEX rallied in the second quarter and defeated winless Banco de Oro, 84-71.

With Art dela Cruz and Baser Amer at the offensive, the Road Warriors shot 57 percent (11 of 19) and outscored the Bulldogs, 27-14, in the second period. NLEX led 43-33 at halftime and never trailed again en route to their second win in as many games.

It was another heartbreaker for the Bulldogs (0-5), who took a 19-16 lead after the first period but were held to 3 of 16 shooting in the next 10 minutes.

Lozada and Jeckster Apinan scored 14 points apiece, Reil Cervantes had 12 and Rodney Brondial added 10 for the Superchargers, who went 9 for 18 in the first quarter to open a 23-10 lead that held on to the end.

“Up to this point my players are physically and mentally sound to do battle against any team. But I also would like to acknowledge the scouting work of my assistants because it makes my job easy,” Sison said.

“I don’t want to take anything from Derulo. I think they’re a good team. Right now I think they’re still feeling their way in the league.”
