Tigers, Knights to hold benefit game for ‘Yolanda’ victims

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Dominican schools Santo Tomas and Letran play each other Wednesday at the Letran Gym in Intramuros, Manila in a benefit game to generate funds the two will donate to relief efforts for victims of typhoon Yolanda.

Letran athletic moderator Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, on Monday announced the Knights and the Tigers, who interestingly finished runners up in their respective leagues, NCAA and UAAP, will play at 2 p.m. with tickets pegged at P300 each.

"We had this joke that it will be a match between the lonely Knights and the crying Tigers because we both lost in our leagues, us in the NCAA and them in the UAAP," said Calvo. "But joking aside, we decided to play a game for a cause for our countrymen in need.

"We will also welcome donations in cash and in kind aside from the tickets," he added.

Calvo said the whole of the Caloy Garcia-coached Letran team that lost to eventual NCAA titlist San Beda and the Pido Jarencio-mentored UST squad that was beaten by La Salle will be there to show support.

It included Letran's Raymond Almazan and UST's Jeric Teng, who were both drafted by Rain or Shine in the PBA rookie draft a few weeks back.

Meanwhile, San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez announced the triumphant Lions will hold their bonfire on Friday at its Mendiola campus also for a cause.

The NCAA has also donated P300,000 to TV 5's relief effort as early as last week.
