Major League Baseball pitches in for Tacloban

MANILA, Philippines - Major League Baseball (MLB) delivered a homerun in the form of a $200,000 donation to UNICEF and the American Red Cross to help the relief efforts for the countless victims of Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines.

The MLB Players Association also rose to the occasion and donated $250,000 from the players’ fund.

Aside from the cash donations, Major League Baseball also plans to utilize its own website (www.mlb.com) to encourage its fans from around the world to send in their donations.

The MLB move comes after the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association donated $250,000 to the typhoon victims.

The NBA donation will be coursed through UNICEF and the United States fund.

The Miami Heat took it further when they donated $1 million for all the relief efforts in the Philippines, which was struck by the world’s most powerful typhoon ever recorded.

The Los Angeles Lakers also donated $150,000.

Walt Disney Company, the mother company of leading sports channel ESPN, also donated $500,000 in humanitarian aid, coursing it through the Save the Children and The American Red Cross.

The company also disclosed it plans to match donations that will be given by its employees to organizations involved in disaster relief, recovery and rehabilitation operations.
