Team Asia takes huge lead in Queen’s Cup

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Asia’s best lady cuemasters, bannered by Filipina world 10-ball champion Rubilen Amit, took a commanding 8-3 lead against their counterparts from the West as they closed in on the BET.com Queens Cup crown yesterday at Resorts World Manila.

After taking a 4-2 lead in Tuesday’s opening of the duel, Team Asia won all but one of the five matches in Day 2 as they moved two games away from wrapping up the title in this race-to-10 affair against Team West.

Amit kicked off a blazing performance for Asia as she turned back British legend Allison Fisher in the first singles, 4-2. The Cebuana ace later partnered with Taiwanese Pei Chen Tsai to beat Fisher and Austrian star Jasmin Ouschan in the doubles play, 4-2.

Tsai racked up two more victories for Asia, beating Ouschan in a hill-hill singles battle, 4-3, and teaming up with Korean Ga Young Kom and Chinese  Si Ming Chen in a 4-1 rout of British bets Allison Fisher, Kelly Fisher and American Vivian Villareal in 3-on-3 play.

The two Fishers, Ouschan and Villareal, however, prevented a sweep for Asia with a 4-1 verdict in the 4-on-4 matches.

Team Asia will seek to finish off Team West today in the last day of the Ryder Cup-style 10-ball tourney.
