Teener sparkles in Phl Open bowl

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Teener Ivan Malig of TBAM-Prima turned in a superb game to seize the early Class O all-events lead in the 42nd Philippine International Open tenpin bowling championships at the Sta. Lucia Center in Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall in Cainta, Rizal last Monday.

A member of the National Youth squad, the 15-year-old Malig collected 1460 pinfalls on impressive scores of 649 in singles, 429 in doubles and 382 in team to pull away from SLETBA’s Lito Santarinala (1364) and BALP’s Angel Tolentino (1332).

Malig was a member of the Youth team which competed in the recent Asian Youth Championships in Hong Kong.

JD Campos, another youthful TBAM-Prima stalwart who powered his team to top spot in the men’s Class O class, fell just 13 pins shy of matching Malig’s total as he submitted 1447 (537 for singles, 400 doubles and 516 team) to move ahead in Class B all-events.

Campos finished 84 and 108 pins away from SLETBA’s Ted Victorino and TBAM-Prima’s Dafort Diokno, respectively.

Other early all-event leaders in the 15-day kegfest were PBAP’s Jai Ramirez (1103) in ladies’ Class O, TBAM’s Mon Camba (1356) and PBA’s Lynn Tan in men’s and ladies’ Class A and TBAM-Prima’s Jasha Jaron (1312) in ladies’ Class B.

PBA’s Nilo Penado (1325) and SLETBA’s Papio de Dios (1325) trailed Camba, PBA’s Nelia Santos (1187) came in second to Tan, while TBAM-Prima’s Angel Lazo (1178) and ATBA’s Ching Co (1175) followed Jaron.

The international tourney is sanctioned by the World Tenpin Bowling Association and the Asian Bowling Federation and organized by the Philippine Bowling Congress in cooperation with Sta. Lucia Mall, Boysen Paints, the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission.  It is also supported by the University of Perpetual Help System, Richmonde Hotel Ortigas and the National Bowling Tour.
