Korean rules first GTC title at Clark

Zebra Racing’s Sung Joon Park (inset) emerges the first non-Japanese champion of Winds Formula Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines - Zebra Racing Team, led by Filipino-Korean ace driver Sung Joon Park, ended Japan’s domination of the Winds Formula Philippines at the Clark International Speedway recently.

“This is for the Filipinos,” said Park after emerging the first non-Japanese winner of the event with support from Zebra Racing’s partners Winds Formula Philippines, Fastem, Petronas Lubricants Philippines, Monster Energy Philippines, C! Magazine, Kotse.com, AutoIndustrya.com, Pinoy Loves Wheels, Team A, Ozawa JDM, Rally Parts, Chi Shirts and Anime Sky.

“I owe a lot to my second motherland where I was raised and got the chance to realize my racing dreams.  And I could not have achieved this rare feat without the support of fellow Filipino drivers and the crowd who supported me all the way,” he also said.

Left alone to carry on the fight for Zebra Racing with the absence of teammate Jeremy San Diego, Park remained composed and determined, and showed good prospect when he posted the fastest lap time of two minutes and 10.740 seconds in the time trials.

At pole position in the race proper, Park bucked a shift lapse and overcame the challenges of Japanese rivals Teruki Yoshida, Kazutoshi Narita, Yuta Kobayashi and Yousuke Yabushita.

Recovering from his lapse, Park roared back in the lead and kept the Japanese behind to the finish.
