Phil’s 6-goal 28-min surge propels Sparks

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Phil Younghusband exploded with six goals in the second half to power Loyola Meralco Sparks to a 9-0 romp over Navy FC in the United Football League Cup at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig City Sunday night.

Younghusband, who just broke up with his celebrity girlfriend Angel Locsin, came off the bench and unloaded all his six goals in a 28-minute stretch starting on the 48th as the Sparks turned what had been a tight first half contest, 1-0, into a runaway triumph.

It was the Sparks’ second straight victory after likewise blanking Dolphins United FC, 16-0, last Oct. 19 as they tied the Green Archers-Globe side in Group E with six match points.

Chad Edward Gould scored on the 23rd minute before Younghusband went scoring binge in the second half in impressive fashion, leaving the Navymen dazed and reeling to their first setback.

Navy dropped to joint third with Dolphins United FC with three points.

In another Group D match, Dolphins United walloped Blue Guards, 11-1, while former Cup titlist Air Force grounded Agila FC, 3-0, and Stallion FC trounced Bright Star, 3-1, to remain tied at second in Group C with six points.

Cebu Queen City United paces the group with seven points.
