Revilla opts out of fifth playing year

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Holder La Salle will embark on its quest for back-to-back UAAP men’s basketball crown next season without starting point guard L.A. Revilla, who decided to forego his fifth playing year to aspire for the pros.

Revilla, who handled the playmaking chores for the Archers in their ascension to the UAAP Season 76 throne via a 2-1 win over Santo Tomas last week, applied for the Philippine Basketball Association rookie draft just before Friday’s deadline.

La Salle’ representative to the UAAP board Henry Atayde said the 5-foot-8 Revilla, who had made a successful comeback from diabetes and hyperthyroidism in the early part of his stint with DLSU, has gotten the blessings of the coaching staff and university officials.

“I’m very happy for him and I pray for his health and success. He has played for DLSU with the same passion and intensity all these years despite his injuries and medical concerns and I can’t thank him enough,” Atayde said.

Revilla averaged 5.9 points, four rebounds and 2.6 assists in 17 games with the Archers in Season 76.

His spot is expected to be filled up by Thomas Torres and Kib Montalbo.

“Thomas has had enough experience to take over and with Montalbo always ready. Also hopefully with (Terrence) Mustre coming in, it will complete our needs,” said Atayde, referring to the son of former PBA player Mike Mustre who used to play hoops in the UK.

With an intact lineup from the champion team, La Salle is tipped to be a heavy favorite next season.

“I never stressed winning to this team, getting the championship. It’s all about improving and getting better on a daily basis. And I can promise, guarantee, we’ll be better next season,” DLSU coach Juno Sauler said.
