Phl chessers topple rivals

MANILA, Philippines - Jan Jodilyn Fronda humbled Woman Fide Master Barbara Juhasz of Hungrary while Jerad Docena trounced Ozan Cingoz in the seventh round of the World Junior Chess Championships in Kocaeli, Turkey yesterday.

The win, Fronda’s second straight, raised her total to four as she moved up to joint 18th while Docena stood in 53rd with 3.5 points.

The Filipino bets try to improve on their respective rankings with Docena meeting FM Samuel Franklin of England and  Fronda facing off with WIM Maria Bezgodova of Russia in the eighth round.

GM Yu Yangyi of China and WGM Irina Bulmaga of Romania continued to hold sway in their respective divisions with the former pooling 6.5 points and the latter scoring six points.
