Altas escape Generals; Archers, Titans stay in contention

MANILA, Philippines – The University of Perpetual Help Altas turned to the stripe at endgame and put away the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 71-66,  Sunday  in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda-Manila campus in Mendiola.

Gabriel Dangangan and Melvin Rodriguez led with 15 and 11 points, and they sank a pair of charities each in the last 2.7 seconds, sending the Altas to their sixth win in seven matches.

This firmed up the Altas' grip of the first of two semifinals slots in Group A, and with still a game left in their elimination round assignment.

The De La Salle Green Archers and Enderun Titans stayed in the thick of the fight for the last semis berth in Group A, along with the San Beda Red Lions and the National University Bulldogs.

 The Green Archers got 29 points from Benoit Mbala and swamped the Angeles University Foundation Great Danes, 92-66.

 They share the same 5-2 card with the National University Bulldogs and  the Enderun Titans, who were led by Jordan Rios with 25 points as they stopped the Letran Knights, 80-71.

The San Beda Red Lions tote a 4-1 card, and their fate will be known in their last three assignments.

 In the junior divison, St. Jude won over the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 58-44, and they drew 16 points from Francis Go, and improved to 3-5 in Group B.

The San Sebastian Staglets prevailed over the La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, 59-47, and hiked their slate in Group A at 4-3.
