Pinays ram Burmese in Asian volley

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines kept the momentum of its five-set win over Sri Lanka as it swept Myanmar, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18, in the Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship classification phase in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand Tuesday night.

Honey Royse-Tubino fired 12 while Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Joy Benito combined for 20 points as the Power Pinays rolled past their Southeast Asian neighbors to stay on course for a best Top 9 finish.

The Filipina spikers take a rest Wednesday and resume their campaign Thursday.

“We’re so happy,” said skipper Angeli Tabaquero. “A win (over Sri Lanka) is already an achievement. Now we made it two – and in three sets.”

Tabaquero capped the Power Pinays’ strong finish against the Burmese by delivering the game-clinching shot. The Filipina spikers outscored their rivals, 10-3, to break off a 15-all score.

Coach Nestor Pamilar admitted initially feeling some pressure, but eventually settled down once the Power Pinays got to their rhythm.

Myanmar coach Banterng Kaopong, a Thai national, believes the Filipina spikers will go a long way after seeing his team beaten in straight sets.

“With a good program, they will be strong again in Asia,” said Kaopoing. “I think the Philippine team is very strong. All they have to do is keep joining international leagues for experience.”
