Pingoy, Adornado take charge anew as Eagles claw Chiefs

MANILA, Philippines -- The duo of Jerie Pingoy and Joma Adornado struck again as the Ateneo Blue Eagles prevailed over the Arellano University Chiefs, 57-48, Saturday  in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the Arellano University gym in Legarda, Manila.

Pingoy came up with one of his best games, making 22 points for the Blue Eagles, who claimed their fourth consecutive in Group A.

Adornado chipped in 10 for the Blue Eagles, who held the Chiefs to just 10 in the second quarter and then took a 45-33 halftime lead.

Now wielding a 6-1 win-loss record in second spot, the Blue Eagles remained on course for one of two semis slots in their bracket.

The last time around, Pingoy banged in 23 points when the Loyola dribblers crushed the University of the East Warriors, 75-59.

They are tipped to make it to the semis with the unbeaten Lyceum Philippines University Pirates (5-0), according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa.

In the junior division, the Adamson Baby Falcons drew 12 points from Dave Cabanilla as they turned back the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 54-39, and posted their sixth straight win in Group B.

They stayed abreast with the equally unbeaten San Beda Red Cubs.

Trinity won over National University, 97-89, while Letran edged La Salle-Zobel, 97-87, in Group A.

Rengel Yongco shot 24 points for St. Jude as they stopped EAC-ICA, 73-29.
