RTU, PWU spikers trip WNC rivals

MANILA, Philippines - Rizal Technological University and Philippine Women’s University sustained their form and notched their third straight victories to remain tied for the lead in the 44th WNCAA senior volleyball tournament.

PWU likewise pace the senior basketball tournament along with defending champion Centro Escolar University and St. Scholastica’s College with similar 3-0 slates.

RTU downed Miriam College in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-11, while PWU needed five sets to stop San Beda College Alabang, 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10, at the RTU gym last Sunday.

Defending champion CEU beat University of Asia and the Pacific, 25-21, 25-13, 25-11, to post its second straight win.

La Consolacion College Manila, meanwhile, barged into the win column after two losses, besting Assumption College, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21.

St. Scholastica gained a share of the lead in Junior A with idle La Salle College Antipolo at 2-0 as it outlasted St. Jude Catholic School, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-12; and San Beda also improved to 2-0 in Junior B with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Poveda.

De La Salle Zobel, San Beda and Miriam pace the midgets division also with 2-0 records.

At the Chiang Kai Shek gym, PWU whipped La Consolacion, 74-39, with Richelyn Badajos scoring a game-high 15 points; CEU dumped San Beda, 76-30; and St. Scholastica leaned on the 30 points of Aiyani Mat’hana to trounce UA&P, 64-51.  RTU, with Rica Francisco topscoring with 16 points, tied La Consolacion for third spot at 1-1 as it clobbered Assumption, 70-32.
