CEU, PWU, St. Scho share WNCAA lead

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Centro Escolar University, Philippine Women’s University and St. Scholastica’s College zoomed to their second straight wins over the weekend to share the lead in the 44th WNCAA senior basketball tournament.

CEU trounced Miriam College, 96-24; PWU outlasted last year’s runner-up Rizal Technological University, 67-59; and St. Scholastica whipped Assumption College, 69-45, at the Chiang Kai Shek gym on Sunday to post 2-0 marks.  

La Consolacion College Manila bounced back from an opening-day loss with a 61-39 victory over host University of Asia and the Pacific for a 1-1 slate.

In the juniors division, defending champion Miriam also improved to 2-0 after dumping Assumption, 86-14, on Saturday at the St. Scholastica gym.  Defending midgets champion De La Salle Zobel debuted with a 49-30 victory over Miriam while St. Stephen’s High School bested Poveda, 34-25.  

Other junior division winners were Angelicum over St. Paul College Pasig, 53-28; Chiang Kai Shek College over St. Scholastica, 81-48, behind the combined 26 points of Je-anne Camelo and Hazel Kho; and DLSZ over St. Stephen, 86-55.

At the RTU gym in Mandaluyong also last Sunday, PWU and RTU won in contrasting fashion to share top spot at 2-0 while defending champion CEU easily won its inaugural match.

PWU needed four sets to stop Miriam, 25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 25-15; RTU downed Assumption, 25-4, 25-10, 25-7; and CEU won against La Consolacion, 25-15, 25-15, 25-17.  UA&P also beat St. Scholastica, 20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-15.

Winning their first matches in the juniors level were St. Scholastica over Angelicum College, 25-7, 25-14, 25-20; San Beda College Alabang over CKSC, 25-12, 25-18, 21-25, 23-25, 15-2; St. Paul over St. Stephen, 25-13, 25-12, 25-9; DLSZ over Poveda, 25-11, 25-11, 25-7; and La Salle College Antipolo over Assumption, 25-19, 25-11, 25-6.
