Mikee happy with FIBA-Asia success

MANILA, Philippines - The tremendous success generated by the country’s hosting of the 27th FIBA-Asia Championship should rub off on the PBA Governor’s Cup which fires off Aug. 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Nabubuhay ang basketball,” said Mikee Romero, team owner of Global Port in the PBA.

Over the last few days, Romero has been to the venue to watch and support Gilas Pilipinas in its determined bid to advance to the 2014 World Championship in Spain.

Romero said it’s a delight to see the crowd show up in full force each time Gilas plays. He said the crowd helps in playing a huge role in the team’s success.

“I think the crowd easily gives our team 10 to 12 points a game. There’s really a big difference holding the tournament in our country,” he said.

Romero took his hat off to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan for working hard in making the hosting a reality.

“Buti nakuha ni MVP (Pangilinan) ang hosting nito. If we surpass Korea, I think we have a big, big chance of winning, especially with a crowd like this,” he said.

When the PBA Governors’ Cup unfolds next week, Romero said he hopes that crowd will show the same support.

“It should transcend to the PBA. If we win the title here, the PBA will be jampacked everyday,” he said.

Romero watched the crucial Gilas game against Kazakhstan the other day, and was too glad to see one of his players, Gary David, shine for Gilas.

David, who struggled in the opening games, exploded for 22 points against Kazakhstan, going 4-of-6 from three-point country, and leading Gilas to the semis.

“He poured it all out. As a fan of Gilas I’m very happy for him,” said Romero.
