Llavanes rules MCC chess tilt
MANILA, Philippines - Rommel Llavanes of the Phl Air Force drew his final round match against second seed Rafael Caneda of NU to rule the MCC Amateurs chess tournament at the Walter Mart Sucat in Parañaque City last Sunday.
The standoff gave the eighth-seeded Llavanes, brother of NM Ronald Llavanes, a total of 6.5 points to emerge solo champion in the seven-round Swiss system tournament backed by US-based Rosita Lee of Las Vegas and F&B Glass, Aluminum Supplies and Services Corp.
Llavanes took home the top P4,000 purse in the event conducted by the Metropolitan Chess Club.
Danmaersk Mangao and unheralded Mark Marchado and Narciso Gayares finished with identical six points to finish tied for second while Caneda wound up in joint fifth with Rowel Canaveral with 5.5 points.
Lourecel Hernandez, Jay-R Sumagang, Eddie Sotto, Michael Abaigar, Noriel del Castillo, Daniel Collantes, Romar Geremia, Feliz Aguilera, Ernie Faeldonia, Einstein Padua, Kerby Acoba and Rembel Apoya all ended up with five points.
The other category winners were Justine Mordido (12-under), Vladimir Gonzales (16-under) of Calamba, Christine Hernandez (ladies), Padua (seniors) and Gayares, Marchado and Mangao (unrated).
Meanwhile, the next MCC Amateurs tournament will be held Aug. 18.
