Volunteer Marines help young swimmers take the plunge

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Fleet Marines are conducting their own swimming competitions at the least cost possible to the govenment – by getting Marines on duty to serve as tournament officials.

The Philippine Swim League, which conducts regular monthly swimming competitions, yesterday held the PSL 45th Leg Series, dubbed first Flag Officer in Command Swim Meet, headed by Admiral Jose Luis Alano and hosted by Fleet Marines‘ Arlene Palces, at the Navy swimming pool at Fort Bonifacio.

PSL president Susan Papa said the Navy reduced tournament costs considerably by getting Navy Marines officers on duty to assist meet director Joey Andaya to handle all aspects of the age-group competition, particularly the timing of the events, for marines’ children,

“We assigned all our Navy officers on duty to work the tournament on the technical side,“ Alano said. “ We thank the PSL for giving us the opportunity to host a swimming competition at no cost for us since we did the officiating ourselves.“

“We encourage all clubs to conduct their open or invitational tournaments at the lowest cost possible by getting the services of technical officials from their ranks,” said Papa.

Papa added that fees take a large chunk of organizational costs which are absorbed by competitors through the entry fees.

â€œOur aim is to make competitions as inexpensive as possible to get as many swimmers to join. Joining competitions need not be expensive,” she added.

“We in fact offer our meet manager software program at no cost to the hosting team to make it easier for them to organize their competitions,” she added.
