Falcons clip Pirates, Squires complete sweep in Fr. Martin Cup

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Adamson Falcons and the Letran Squires waylaid their respective foes and formally earned semifinals slots in the ongoing 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament.

The Falcons, with Jessie Pedrosa firing 20 points, relied on their second stringers to finish the job and put away the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates, 70-55, in Group A of the senior division, Monday at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

The Squires, behind Yves Sazon and Ivan Villanueva with 27 and 18 points, subdued the La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers, 88-74, in Group A of the junior action Tuesday at the St. Placid gymnasium in San Beda College-Manila in Mendiola.

The Falcons secured the first semis berth with a 6-1 win-loss record.  The loss, meanwhile, put the Pirates chances in trouble with their 4-3 win-loss slate.

The Squires completed a seven-game sweep to clinch the first semis slot in their bracket, while the Junior Archers followed behind with their 6-1 card.

They joined Group B qualifiers San Beda-A (8-0) and Xavier School (4-2) in the next round.

In other games, Ateneo-B drew 10 points from Joma Adornado as they won over PATTS, and stayed in the hunt for a semis berth at 4-3 in Group A of the senior action.

Claire Sambile shot 12 points for the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, who demolished the Fatima University Lady Phoenix, 42-22, to hike their record to 5-2 and remain in contention for the women’s finals.
