Iglupas First Gen champ

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Second seed Khim Iglupas recovered from a stinging second set loss as she upended top seed Roxanne Resma, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, to annex the girls’ 18-and-under title in the First Gen-Juntaphil Metro Age Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.

Iglupas came back strong in the decider and pounced on Resma’s errors while coming away with big shots to rule the premier category in the Group I event presented by First Gen and organized by Junior Tennis Association of the Philippines.

Resma, who settled for 150 points, earlier copped the 16-U crown with an emphatic 6-1, 6-1 romp over Frances Santiago, who surprised Iglupas in the second round. Resma and Iglupas later combined to win the 18-U doubles crown.

Santiago, meanwhile, shocked top seed Rafaella Villanueva, 6-3, 6-1, to snatch the 14-and-U diadem while No. 1 Mikaela Vicencio played true to form and frustrated Alexandra Eala, 6-1, 6-1, to annex the 12-U title in the event sponsored by Smart Communications, Technifibre Balls, Accel, RCBC and Pet One.

Second seed Marcen Gonzales broke top ranked Jed Olivarez twice and carved out a thrilling 6-4, 6-4 decision to pocket the boys 16-U plum.
