Amazona, Espinosa shine in Cebu tennis

MANILA, Philippines - Young guns Jeleardo Amazona and Hannah Espinosa outlasted their rivals to rule the Cebu leg of the 2013 Head Junior Satellite Circuit national tennis age-group tournament recently at the Consolacion Cebu tennis courts.

Amazona, who already took home titles from the Davao and General Santos legs, regained his winning form by ousting Cebuano Francis Parangan in a dramatic match, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, in the boys’ 18-under singles.

Amazona, however, settled for second in the boys’ 16-under after losing to Mikko Ringia, 3-6 (ret.).

“I was exhausted due to the heat,” said the Davao Oriental native. “But I’m happy to win a title again.”

Espinosa, meanwhile, scored a 6-2, 7-5 win over Erika Manduriao for the girls’ 18-under crown, while Alexie Santos of Palawan rallied past Jana Pages of Cebu, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5, in the girls’ 16-under.

In the 14-under category, Alexie Santos routed Zethley Mae Alferez, 6-2, 6-0, for the girls’ crown, while Janus Ringia won over Rustin Suarez via walkover for the boys’ title.

In the 12-under division, Carlyn Bless Guarde captured the girls’ crown by beating Cristella Marie Sampan, 4-6, 6-4, 6-10.
