UP scorching hot in Fr. Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines Maroons and three junior squads – the La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, San Beda-A Red Cubs and Letran Squires – are on a winning run in the 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament.

The Maroons drew big baskets from Mikee Reyes, Julius Wong and Raul Soyud as they posted back-to-back wins over the Lyceum Pirates, last Thursday, 57-56, and over the Ateneo-B Blue Eagles, 68-62, last Sunday.

Reyes and Wong eked out 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Maroons against the Pirates, while Soyud led with 15 points against the Blue Eagles.

This put the Maroons on top of Group B with their fourth consecutive win, and they are now in strong contention for a seat in the semifinals, according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa.

The Red Cubs, who posted their fourth straight victory with the Junior Archers and the Squires, also claimed twin victories in Group A, first with a 69-42 stopping of the Jesus is Lord Christian Foundation Junior Jilians.

Their second came after Arvin Tolentino shot 19 points for the Red Cubs-A after they blasted University of the East, 80-56.

 Renzo Subido, back from his stint in the 2013 Palarong Pambansa, fired 21 points as he led the Junior Archers to a 67-39 demolition of San Beda-B, and into win no. 4 in Group B.

Ford Ruaya tallied 19 points for the Squires, who prevailed over Emilio Aguinaldo College, 64-58, and joined the Junior Archers in the lead of Group B.
