Carlos completes MVP-PBaRS ‘double’

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Bianca Carlos overwhelmed Patrisha Malibiran with her power game and fashioned out a 21-11, 21-10 victory to cop the girls’ Under-19 singles crown and complete a golden double in the MVP Sports Foundation-Philippine Badminton Ranking System (PBaRS) seventh leg in San Fernando, Pampanga last Tuesday.

Fresh from her 21-15, 21-13 romp over Gelita Castilo in the Open finals, Carlos pounded the second-seeded Malibiran with her power smashes and drop shots to essay the 25-minute victory, duplicating her sweep of the twin titles in last year’s Makati leg of the annual event sponsored by MVP Sports Foundation.

The St. Paul College-Pasig standout thus pocketed a total of P90,000, including the P70,000 she won in the premier division, in the five-day event sanctioned by the Philippine Badminton Association headed by Vice President Jejomar Binay with sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan as chairman and Rep. Albee Benitez as sec-gen.

Carlos’ straight-set win over Malibiran also capped her domination of the U-19 class where she never dropped a set although she had to struggle past Nikki Servando, 21-19, 19-21, 21-10, in the Open semis to set a title clash with Castilo.

With the twin wins, Carlos is expected to pull away from the pack in the Open and U-19 ranking with fellow Golden Shuttle Foundation mainstay Toby Gadi firming up his hold of the lead following his seventh straight men’s Open romp.

Gadi fought back from a set down to foil Patrick Natividad, 16-21, 21-15, 21-11, in the finals while Roslee Pedrosa beat Alvin Morada, 21-16, 21-12, to capture the boys’ U-19 diadem.

Other winners in the country’s only ranking tournament, backed by Victor, exclusively distributed in the Philippines by PCOME Industrial Sales, Inc., were Corpus Christi’s Daniel Pantanosas and PBA’s Iyah Sevilla (U-15), Christian Bernardo and Paola Bernardo of PBA MSI Jrs (U-19 mixed doubles), PBA’s Carlos Cayanan and Morada (U-19 boys doubles), Jessie Francisco and Lea Inlayo of PBA (U-19 girls doubles).

Gabriel Villanueva and Flo Lamigo of PBA (Open mixed doubles), Castilo and Dia Magno of GSF (Open women’s doubles), Joper Escueta and Ronel Estanislao of PBA (Open men’s doubles), John Bernardo and Chanelle Lunod of MSI Jr Team Babolat (U-15 mixed doubles), Alyssa Geverjuan and Sevilla of PBA (U-15 girls doubles) and Bryan Bernardo and Matthew Bernardo of MSI Jr Team Babolat (U-15 boys doubles).
