MANILA, Philippines - Southwestern U bucked the loss of its coach and closed out its Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup stint in style, beating UAAP runner-up University of Santo Tomas, 64-63, at the Flying V Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
Melwin Holper scored five points in the clutch to help turn a 57-59 deficit into a 62-59 edge that the Cobras, the reigning Cebu collegiate champions, preserved to end their campaign with a 3-5 (win-loss) record.
Earlier, Jose Rizal shrugged off a sluggish start with a strong windup as it downed St. Benilde, 87-75, in a fight-marred game for a 1-2 card.
Blazers Robert Bartolo and Ralph Deles were tossed out after getting assessed with disqualifying fouls in a four-minute stretch in the second period.
Arellano U hung tough down the stretch to edge Adamson, 80-78, and remain unscathed in four games.
