Yao Ming here to join Sharks in Manila tour
MANILA, Philippines - Yao Ming, the most influential Asian player to ever see action in the NBA, flew in last night to join the Shanghai Sharks for the Philippines-China Friendship Games featuring a couple of exhibition games with Smart Gilas Pilipinas 2 and a PBA selection on May 6 and 7.
The former Houston Rockets star, however, may not suit up for either matches but is expected to be on hand during the cage clinics with the streetkids at the Philsports Arena in Pasig today.
“Yao is already retired and injured,†said Richie Garcia, chair of the organizing Philippine Sports Commission. “If he decides to play, that will be great for everyone but if not, his presence alone is already inspiring.â€
The NBA has seen massive growth in Asia, particularly in China, since Yao secured his release from the Chinese Basketball Association to play for the Rockets, who drafted him in 2002.
Yao was an eight-time All-Star, made it to the All-NBA Second Team twice and All-NBA Third Team three times, averaging 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in nine seasons. But injuries slowed down the 7-6 Yao, who eventually retired three years ago.
Off the court, Yao took part in many charity events, including the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program.
He also once hosted a telethon to help stop the spread of SARS, held an auction to raise money for underprivileged children in China, donated $2 million and created a foundation to help rebuild schools destroyed during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
In August last year, Yao started filming a documentary on the Northern White Rhinoceros and is currently an ambassador for elephant conservation.
