Global scores before Cebu trip; Kaya held to 3rd straight draw

Alder Almo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -- Global scored a fitting send-off win before flying out to Cebu with a 4-0 blanking of the Green Archers United Globe on Thursday night  in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill.

Global, who are scheduled to participate for the first time in the AFC President's Cup from May 8-12, needed 45 minutes to unlock the Green Archers' defense.

Sudanese striker Izzo Elhabib gave Global a 1-nil cushion at the half, sneaking in a goal just before the break.

Global turned on the heat in the second half with the returning Jeff Christiaens and Denis Wolf, who have just recovered from their separate injuries. The Azkals' duo extended Global's lead to three in the first 26 minutes of the second half.

After Christiaens made a goal in the 59th mark, Wolf scored his first goal as a Global player 12 minutes later.

Another Azkal in Carli de Murga put the match away when he added one more as the 90th minute struck in the clock.

The win enabled Global to regain the second spot from the Loyola Meralco Sparks with its 10th win against a lone draw and a loss which is still good for 31 points.

The Archers, who blew scoring chances by Jesus Melliza and Chieffy Caligdong, remained at eight spot with eight points after suffering their eight loss of the season.

In the other match, Kaya was held to its third straight draw by Nomads.

Kaya failed to capitalize on an early goal by Nate Burkey as the LBC-backed club surrendered the equalizer in the second half courtesy of Fidelis Nnabuife.

The draw earned Kaya, which sorely missed OJ Porteria due to suspension, a solitary point to keep the foothold of the fourt spot with 18 points. Nomads, meanwhile, climbed up to sixth spot with 12 points.
