MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion National U cranked it up in the second half to trample Jose Rizal, 71-60, and storm to its third straight win in the Filoil Flying V Cup at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Ray Parks put in monster numbers of 15 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three blocks while Troy Rosario (15 markers) and Alfred Aroga (12 points and 10 boards) provided solid support as the Bulldogs grabbed a share of the lead with Arellano in Group A.

The defense-minded Chiefs earlier disposed of St. Benilde, 63-50, to go 3-0.

The Bulldogs uncorked a 12-2 blast to pull away, 51-39, and fanned the late game uprising of the pesky Heavy Bombers to remain unscathed in the summer tourney.

“We picked up our defense in the second half. We weren’t getting enough defensive stops in the first half,” said Parks.

Paolo Pontejos paced the Bombers (0-2) with 15 points spiked by three triples.

The Chiefs detonated a 22-10 bomb in the payoff period to tear the game apart and hand coach Koy Banal his first victory over St. Benilde in two seasons.

“We took up the challenge of trying to win three straight, something we were not able to do last year,” said graduating Fil-Canadian James Forrester. “We still have a long way to go but it sure feels good to be winning.”

The Chiefs put up a stifling defense that made the Blazers bleed for baskets, forcing the latter to a tournament low 50 points on a measly 28 percent shooting clip.

Far Eastern foiled the 32-point explosion of Perpetual’s Nosa Omorogbe and hacked out an 88-81 decision for the Tams’ first win in two starts.
