MANILA, Philippines -- Rookie Gerard Dizon tallied 27 points in leading the University of Perpetual Help Altas to a 73-69 win over the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in the ongoing 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium.
The Altas’ debut win came as the La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, University of the East Pages joined the San Beda-A Red Cubs in posting their second straight victories in the junior division.
This gave the four squads a good headstart in the race to the semifinals slots in their respective brackets, according to Commissioner Robert de la Rosa.
Renzo Subido unloaded 23 points for the Junior Archers as they walloped University of the Philippines Integrated School, while the Pages turned back the Perpetual Help Altalettes, 59-56.
The Red Cubs, on the other hand, blasted the Far Eastern University-FERN Baby Tamaraws, 72-47.
In the women’s action, Inna Corcuera dished out 10 points for the La Salle Lady Archers, who downed FEU, 61-31.
The 5’10 Dizon, a discovery from Tarlac, banged in 15 points in the second period for the Altas, who turned the tables on the Generals after they led, 19-15 in the first period.
Dizon’s efforts enabled the Altas to have a rousing start, and gave them a 44-28 halftime edge.
As the Generals went for a last ditch rally in the fourth, the Altas turned to Joel Jolangcob, Junrick Baloria and Jay Ylagan.
Jolangcob’s triple in the last 20.2 seconds, plus charities from Baloria and Ylagan enabled Aric del Rosario-coached squad to stay out of harm’s way.
